Other top picks in the 2010 NFL Draft were Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska, a defensive tackle picked second overall by the Detroit Lions and Gerald McCoy, another defensive tackle and another product of Oklahoma, picked third overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Trent Williams was picked fourth overall by the Washington Redkins. Williams is also from Oklahoma University, meaning three of the top four draft picks in the 2010 NFL draft played their college ball at Oklahoma.

The Blue Devils narrowly defeated Butler Monday night in the men’s national championship game, pulling out a two-point, 61-59 victory. Not only did the win earn Duke its fourth NCAA men’s title but the victory came in a championship game that is an instant classic because of how close it was and because the outcome was in doubt right up to the final buzzer.

The two teams battled all the way, with Duke leading by just one at half. The biggest lead the Blue Devils opened in the second half was five and then Butler rallied to get within one, 60-59, as time wound down. Butler’s had two possessions in those final seconds and got off one medium range shot and one half court shot, but neither went in. Duke prevailed to win the national title.

Only one point separated the two teams as the final minute wound down. Duke was clinging to a 60-59 lead with about 10 seconds left when Butler missed a shot from the right side of the lane.

After the miss, Butler was forced to foul and Duke’s Brian Zoubek made the first of two free throw attempts to push the lead to two. Butler had one final shot attempt from half court but Gordon Hayward’s shot was just offline and rimmed out.

Duke has worn those national championship hats and shirts before. They are a perennial power in men’s college basketball and entered the tournament as a number one seed.

Monday will be Butler’s first appearance in the national championship game. The Bulldogs came into the Big Dance as a number five seed.

None the less, the Butler Bulldogs held off the Michigan State Spartans Saturday, 52-50, to advance to Monday’s title game. Duke had one of its strongest performances of the whole tournament to advance, knocking out West Virginia, 78-57.

Butler will have to try to cool down the hot shooting hand that Duke used to beat WVU. The Blue Devils shot over 52% against the Mountaineers, including 13 of 25 from 3-point range.

Defense helped Butler hold off Michigan State but they will have to shoot better to beat Duke. The Bulldogs made only 15 of 49 shots against MSU (30%) but made up for it with 17-24 accuracy (70%) from the free throw line.

Duke earned their spot in the Final Four with a 78-71 victory over Baylor in the South Regional finals. The Blue Devils hot 3-point shooting and dominance of the offensive boards in the second half led to the win.

Michigan State pulled out a one point win, 70-69, over Tennessee in the Midwest Regional final. MSU’s Raymar Morgan made a free throw with under two seconds left in the game to earn the Spartans their berth in the Final Four.

The Final Four will get underway Saturday when Michigan State takes on Butler. That game will be followed by Duke vs. West Virginia. The national championship game will be Monday April 5 at 9 pm EDT.
 

West Virginia only led Kentucky by two at half but the Mountaineers opened up a double-digit lead in the second half, then held off a Kentucky rally to win, 73-66.

The Butler Bulldogs, whose home court is in Indianapolis, earned a trip to this year’s Final Four being held in their city next weekend by beating Kansas State, 63-56. The Bulldogs were only the fifth seed in the West Regional while Kansas State was a two seed.

Sunday two more teams will have a chance to get their names on a Final Four shirt. Michigan State plays Tennessee in the afternoon game and Baylor will meet Duke in the evening match-up.
 

Earlier Sunday Sweet 16 shirts went into production for qualifiers Michigan State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Cornell and West Virginia.

Saturday production of Sweet 16 shirts started for eight teams that qualified on day one of the second round. Advancing to the regionals Saturday were the University of Washington, Tennessee, Baylor, Butler, Kansas State, St. Mary’s, Northern Iowa University and Kentucky.

Kentucky and Tennessee from the SEC also made it to the Sweet 16 following Saturday’s games. Northern Iowa University is one of the biggest underdogs to make it to the regional round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The NIU Panthers upset Kansas (the number one seed in the 65-team tournament) to advance.

The other three teams earning a Sweet 16 berth Saturday were Butler, the University of Washington and St. Mary’s from northern California.
