The New Orleans Saints were wearing Super Bowl championship shirts and hats Sunday night after an exciting upset of the Indianapolis Colts. The underdog Saints came back from a 10-0 first quarter deficit to upend the favored Colts, 31-17 and win Super Bowl XLIV.

The Colts appeared to be winning the battle up front in the first half, especially when they stopped the Saints from scoring on two consecutive runs from just one yard away from the end zone. That helped the Colts go into intermission ahead 10-6.

Saints’ Coach Sean Payton turned the game around, though, by opening the second half with an onside kick. The Saints Thomas Morstead kicked an excellent onsider that bounced off a Colt player. Chris Reis recovered for the Saints and Drew Brees then drove New Orleans down for a score that gave them a 13-10 lead.

The Colts answered back, though, with a 66-yard drive and a touchdown to go up 17-13. They then held the Saints to a field goal on their next possession and the Colts went into the fourth quarter with a 17-16 lead.

But the final quarter would belong to New Orleans and it would be the Saints lifting the Lombardi trophy and donning the Super Bowl championship shirts and hats. Quarterback Drew Brees led the rally and would be named the Super Bowl MVP.

Midway through the final quarter Brees led a nine play, 59 yard drive with 7-for-7 passing that reached the end zone on a two yard TD pass to Jeremy Shockey. The Saints then attempted a two point conversation but Brees’s pass was called incomplete.

Coach Payton challenged the call, though, and after review, the call was reversed, the two point conversation was good and the Saints led, 24-17. There was still nearly five minutes left for Colt quarterback Peyton Manning to direct a comeback but New Orleans cornerback Tracy Porter made a huge play that put an end to that possibility.

Manning drove the Colts nearly forty yards to New Orleans 31 yard line but then disaster struck for Indy. In what may have been the play of the game, Porter intercepted a Manning pass to Reggie Wayne and returned it 74 yards for a New Orleans touchdown. That put the Saints up by 14.

The Colts looked like they were going to put one more touchdown on the board which would then undoubtedly be followed by an onside kick. They moved all the way to the Saints’ five yard line but the New Orleans defense forced two incomplete passes and the Colts ran out of downs and time.

The Saints had earned the first Super Bowl victory in franchise history and proudly put on the Super Bowl championship shirts and hats to commemorate the historic upset victory.

The New Orleans Saints edged the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night to win the NFC championship and advance to Super Bowl XLIV in two weeks in Miami. The Saints earned the right to wear the NFC championship hats and shirts after a hard-fought 31-28 overtime win over the Vikes.

Garrett Hartley kicked a 40-yard field goal in overtime to win the championship for New Orleans. The Vikings outgained the Saints by a large margin, 475 to 257 yards. But that margin might have even been larger if not for a Saints defense that roughed up Viking quarterback Brett Favre all game and forced two Minnesota fumbles when the Vikings were threatening to score.

Minnesota was their own worst enemy, turning the ball over five times. The Vikings fumbled six times and lost possession three times. Favre threw two interceptions, including one on the Vikings’ final drive in the last minute of the fourth quarter.

The Saints won the coin toss to get the overtime kickoff and then got a great kickoff return from Pierre Thomas, who ran the ball out to the New Orleans 39 yard line. Saint quarterback Drew Brees led New Orleans on a 12 play drive that moved the ball to the Minnesota 22, converting one third and one fourth down play to keep the drive alive.

The Indianapolis Colts were wearing AFC championship hats and shirts Sunday night after they defeated the New York Jets, 30-17 in the AFC championship game in Indianapolis. The Jets held a 17-13 halftime lead and if not for a late Colts TD just before the half, New York would have went into the locker room up 17-6.

But the Colts put up 17 points in the second half while the Indianapolis defense shut out the Jets to earn the Colts their second AFC championship in four years. Quarterback Peyton Manning led the comeback with two touchdown passes while the Indy defense held a Jets rushing attack that had been averaging 170 yards a game to just 86 yards.

Manning finished the game with 377 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie were the Colts’ top receivers. Garcon caught 11 passes for 151 yards while Collie brought down seven throws for 123 yards.

Joeseph Addai led the Colt rushing attach with 80 yards in 16 attempts. The Indianapolis defense was led by Gary Brackett with six tackles and two assists. Antoine Bethea, Kelvin Hayden, Jacob Lacey and Clint Session each had five tackles for the Colts.
 

The Minnesota Vikings will meet the New Orleans Saints in the NFC championship Sunday. The Vikings advanced to the conference championship game with a 34-3 pounding of the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round playoff game.

Quarterback Brett Favre and wide receiver Sidney Rice combined for three touchdowns passes while Favre threw a fourth TD pass to Visanthe Shiancoe. The four TD passes was a career playoff high for Favre.

The Vikings won the NFC North championship with a 12-4 record. That earned them a #2 seed in the NFC and a first round bye. Dallas won in the wildcard round to advance to the divisional round playoff against Minnesota.

But the Cowboys were completely shut down by the Minnesota defense. The Vikings forced four fumbles, two of which they recovered, and intercepted one Tony Romo pass. Ray Edwards led the Viking defense with three sacks while Cedric Griffin and Ben Leber had nine and eight tackles, respectively.

The Vikings will play the New Orleans Saints Sunday January 24 in the NFC championship game. The game will be in New Orleans by virtue of the Saints earning the number one seed with a 13-3 regular season record. The Vikes were 12-4 in the regular season.

The New Orleans Saints left no doubt Sunday that they had earned the NFC South championship and the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs. The Saints had the best record in the NFC at 13-3 to earn that #1 seed.

But after the Saints lost the last three games of the regular season, some thought they might exit the NFL playoffs quickly. The Saints quieted the doubters Sunday. They returned to the high-powered offensive form that led them to the NFC South title with a 45-14 thrashing of the Arizona Cardinals in the divisional playoff game.

Drew Brees threw three touchdown passes while Reggie Bush scored twice for the Saints. Bush scored on a 46-yard run from scrimmage and on an 83-yard punt return. The punt return was the third longest in playoff history.

While Brees and Bush led the high scoring offense, the New Orleans defense held Arizona to just 101 yard rushing and allowed them to convert only one of eight third down attempts.

The Saints will meet the Minnesota Vikings for the NFC championship on Sunday January 24. The Saints earned the home field advantage for the game by earning the #1 seed. Game time in New Orleans will be 6:30 pm EST.
 

Brett Favre became a Minnesota Viking August 18, making many Viking fans happy and creating a whirl wind of opinions both pro and con around the country.

Favre is a former Green Bay Packer, of course, who holds the majority of the passing records in the NFL. He has announced retirements twice, then decided to un-retire and play after all.

When he puts on a Minnesota Viking jersey with Favre and number 4 on it, the rocket-armed quarterback and the Vikings will have a huge number of NFL fans watching. If the Vikings contend for the NFC North title as they are expected to, fan interest will only grow.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the 2009 NBA champions. The Lakers finished off the Orlando Magic in game five Sunday night, 99-86.

The victory earned the Lakers the NBA championship in the best-of-seven series, 4-1. Laker Kobe Bryant was named the Finals MVP.

The Pittsburgh Penguins won the 2009 Stanley Cup Friday night, winning game 7 of the NHL Finals against the Detroit Redwing’s on Detroit’s home ice, 2-1.

The victory came one year after the Penguins lost to the Redwings in the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals when Detroit scored the series winning victory on Pittsburgh’s home ice.

The Penguins fell behind 0-2 in the series against the Red Wings but came back to win the Cup. Maxime Talbot scored both goals for the Penguins in the game 7 victory.

Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury had 22 saves in the narrow win, including a critical stop with time nearly expired. The victory earned Pittsburgh its third Stanley Cup title, first since 1992.
